We`re planning a trip in April to Brasil and Bolivia.
The route is as follows:
- Sao Paolo - 30 March;
- then by bus to Rio, Brasil, maybe sth. more

I am to be in BA for the last three days of Carnival.  Will the parades
be enough or should we travel up the river to the smaller towns(I
forget the names) that have a stronger tradition?

Well, I have been checking out where to stay for a first time month
long visit to BA.  The writtings say that lots of busy streets in
walking distance and Subte access.
