Is it still possible to drive (the former) Route 40 in it's entirety (or the vast majority of it)? Does this road still appear on maps from Coast to Coast? If not, is there a website (or other publication) that gives directions?

My roommates and I are planning a spring break trip to NYC! Hotel prices are way above our budget, so we've been considering hostels. They look nice on-line, but we're a little hesitant. Has anyone stayed in an NYC hostel? What was your experience? Was it un-safe
